A decade ago, renewable energy in India was mostly a policy aspiration. Today, it's one of the fastest-growing parts of the country's power sector, and the numbers behind that shift are worth understanding, not just as statistics, but as a sign of how quickly the country's energy mix is actually changing.
As of mid-2026, India's installed renewable energy capacity has crossed roughly 288 GW, making it the world's third-largest renewable energy market by installed capacity. Solar power leads by a wide margin, accounting for more than half of that total, followed by wind, hydro, and bio-power. Together with nuclear, India's non-fossil fuel capacity has pushed past 297 GW.
Perhaps more striking than the raw numbers is the pace. India added over 55 GW of renewable capacity in the 2025-26 financial year alone, the highest single-year addition in the country's history, and continued that momentum with roughly 29 GW added in just the first half of calendar year 2026.
India's stated goal, announced at COP26 in Glasgow, is 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030. With current capacity sitting at roughly 288 GW, that leaves a gap of around 211 GW to close in a little over four years, which works out to an average of about 47 GW of new capacity every year until the deadline.
That's an ambitious pace, but not an implausible one, given that India has already demonstrated it can add capacity at close to that rate. The country also hit an earlier milestone well ahead of schedule: 50 percent of its cumulative electric power capacity came from non-fossil sources by June 2025, five years before the original 2030 target for that specific benchmark.
India's renewable push gained real structural support through national solar and wind missions launched in the early 2010s, which set ambitious capacity targets and created the policy and auction framework that private developers could build around.
Solar has been the single biggest driver of growth. Falling module costs, large-scale competitive auctions, and government-backed manufacturing incentives have pushed India's solar capacity past 160 GW, with a project pipeline reportedly exceeding 200 GW still in development. A cut in GST on renewable energy equipment, from 12 percent to 5 percent, has added further momentum to domestic demand.
For years, India relied heavily on imported solar modules to meet its capacity targets. That's shifted meaningfully, with domestic solar module manufacturing capacity now estimated at over 170 GW, supported by billions of dollars in fresh investment commitments aimed at building a more self-reliant supply chain.

The country's renewable story is no longer primarily a financing or construction challenge. Solar generation follows a predictable daily curve, peaking around noon, while electricity demand in India peaks in the evening, after the sun has largely set. This mismatch is pushing the sector's next major focus toward battery storage and grid transmission capacity, rather than simply adding more generation capacity on its own. India is now planning transmission infrastructure designed to integrate over 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, and more than 600 GW by 2032, alongside a growing pipeline of battery energy storage system projects meant to shift solar generation into the hours when it's actually needed.
India's renewable expansion isn't just an environmental statistic, it's reshaping investment patterns, domestic manufacturing, and infrastructure planning across the country. Coal-based power generation has already begun declining as a share of the overall mix, and renewable energy met over half of India's peak electricity demand for the first time in mid-2025, a milestone that would have seemed unlikely just a few years earlier.
India's renewable energy journey has moved from ambition to measurable, sustained execution, but the final stretch to 500 GW will test different capabilities than the ones that got the country this far. Generation capacity has proven achievable at scale. What comes next, storage, transmission, and matching supply to when people actually need power, will determine how much of that capacity translates into a genuinely reliable, round-the-clock clean energy grid.
