The Sahara is the largest hot desert on Earth, and Morocco gives you one of its most accessible and beautiful corners: the golden Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Before you go, here are a few facts worth knowing.
- Not all sand: much of the Sahara is rocky plateau and gravel plain. The big dunes, called ergs, cover only a part of it.
- Big temperature swings: days can be hot and nights surprisingly cold, especially in winter, so pack layers.
- Best seasons: spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable for travelling.
- Stars: far from city lights, the night sky is one of the highlights of a night in a desert camp.
- People: the Moroccan Sahara is home to Amazigh (Berber) communities whose hospitality is part of the experience.
