Path of Exile 2 has plenty of crafting currencies, but Preserved Cranium is one of the more interesting options for players working on powerful Rare Jewels. This Abyssal Bone lets you add a hidden Desecrated Modifier to a jewel, creating a chance to turn an already decent item into something much stronger. For endgame players who are constantly refining their builds, crafting resources such as POE 2 Orbs can play an important role alongside Abyss currency when upgrading gear.

What Does Preserved Cranium Do?

Preserved Cranium is an Abyssal Bone currency item that can stack up to 20. Using it is straightforward:

• Right-click the Preserved Cranium
• Left-click a Rare Jewel
• The jewel receives an unrevealed Desecrated Modifier
• Take the jewel to the Well of Souls to reveal the result

The hidden modifier is what makes the process interesting. You do not immediately know what you received, so every use carries a bit of risk and anticipation. That makes it a good idea to save Preserved Cranium for Rare Jewels that already have useful modifiers for your build.

How the Well of Souls Works

The crafting process is not complete until you visit the Well of Souls. It is connected to the Lightless Passage in the Mastodon Badlands, where the Lurking Creature can reveal Desecrated items.

When the hidden modifier is revealed, players are given several options and can choose the one that fits their build best. A minion character may look for minion-related bonuses, while an attack build might prefer physical damage, critical strike stats, attributes, or defensive effects. This extra choice gives players more control than simply using a completely random crafting currency.

For players building new characters or upgrading their endgame setup, many also choose to buy POE 2 Orbs to support other parts of the crafting process.

Why Preserved Cranium Is Useful

One of the biggest advantages of Preserved Cranium is that it works on Rare Jewels of any item level. That gives it much better long-term value than lower-tier Abyssal Bones that are mainly useful during progression.

Compared with other Abyss currencies:

• Gnawed Abyssal Bones are more limited by item level
• Preserved Cranium can be used on Rare Jewels of any item level
• Ancient variants offer more powerful high-end crafting potential

This places Preserved Cranium in a useful middle ground. It is flexible enough for serious endgame crafting without necessarily requiring the most expensive version of the mechanic. Players trying to keep their crafting costs down may also look for cheap POE 2 Orbs when preparing multiple upgrades.

Be Careful With Six-Modifier Jewels

Before using a Preserved Cranium, always check the jewel's existing modifiers. If there is an open prefix or suffix, the new Desecrated Modifier can be added without replacing anything.

A fully modified jewel is much riskier. If all six modifier slots are already filled, the Desecration process can remove one modifier before adding the new one. That means even a strong jewel can lose an important stat.

For safer crafting, try to use the currency on a jewel that:

• Already has several useful modifiers
• Still has room for another modifier
• Matches your current build
• Is valuable enough to justify the risk

This combination of planning and chance is a big part of what makes PoE 2's crafting system interesting.

How to Get Preserved Cranium

Preserved Cranium is mainly connected to Abyss content. Abyss encounters during the campaign and in maps can provide the Bone currencies used for Desecrated crafting. Players can also trade for the item through the Currency Exchange after unlocking access to the system.

Because of its drop level, it is mainly a mid- to late-game resource rather than something you will use early in the campaign. As more players begin investing in jewel crafting, the market for Path of Exile 2 Orbs for sale and other trading currency can become increasingly important for build upgrades.

Is Preserved Cranium Worth Using?

For players who enjoy improving their character one piece at a time, Preserved Cranium is definitely worth understanding. A good Rare Jewel can become much stronger with the right Desecrated Modifier, and the Well of Souls gives you at least some control over the final result.

The key is to avoid wasting it on random jewels. Start with an item that already has useful stats, leave room for a new modifier when possible, and think about what your build actually needs. Every successful reveal can push a character a little further, making Preserved Cranium a simple but surprisingly rewarding part of PoE 2's Abyss crafting system.
