The match penalty carries an automatic one-game suspension pending a league review. What is so interesting about this particular play is it involved getting hit directly in the head by either Muzzin's hip or butt. As Gordon attempts to make a play on the puck, he falls down to one knee just as Muzzin comes flying in and makes direct contact with his head. Muzzin Garrett Jones Jersey match penalty for check to the head of Gordon's head cc Stephanie (@myregularface) Muzzin ended up getting a five-minute major and the match penalty for the hit. Gordon did not return to the game. When it comes to additional discipline, it's all going to come down to whether or not the league feels Muzzin was put in a situation where making head contact was unavoidable, and given that Gordon went down to the ice just before contact, that seems like a strong po sibility. The Kings were leading 3-1 at the time late in the third period, but Muzzin's penalty was quickly followed by a delay of game penalty on the Kings that gave Arizona an extended 5-on-3 power play. The Coyotes capitalized thanks to goals from and just 30 seconds apart to send the game to overtime. Ceci, a restricted free agent, and the Senators became the second NHL case this summer to enter intoarbitrationas the sides failed to reach agreement on a long-term contract extension before Wednesday's hearing. Ceci's camp reportedly sought a contract worth $ Jahmir Johnson Jersey 6 million per season; Ottawa countered with$3.35 million. MORE: Senators set sights onlong-term deal with UFA-to-be Mark Stone The contract decision, good for one year, skewed low toward the team's interests, a departure from arbitration norms that typically favor players. Ceci, 24,can enter into arbitration again following the 2018-19 season unle s the sides agree on a long-term contract before then. Further extension talks must wait until Jan. 1, however. I dont believe discu sions on an extension reached beyond $4 mil in first couple of years, hence no deal was reached. Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) The Senators' 2015 first-round draft pick, now a veteran of 366 NHL games, presentedsomething of a polarizing case. He's long been groomed as the organization's top defense prospect with first-pairing potential. Short of that, Cecihas yet to deliver on such promise. He's coming of a season of five goals and 19 points, playing23:20 per game, but has become known as one of the league's biggestpo se sion liabilitiesmuch of his career. Cody Ceci turned the puck over on 16.4% of his defensive zone po se sions last season. That ranked him 232nd out of 272 qualified defenceman. Yet, it ranked 3rd best amongst Senators defencemen. So, thats pretty much where Ceci and the Senators are at. Mike Kelly (@MikeKellyNHL) Should the Senators eventually followthrough on , their captain and arguably the NHL's top defenseman, Ceci would a sume the mantle as a de facto No. 1 on the Sens' blue line, for better or worse. He now has a full season to prove he's worthy of a long-term investment. If and when the Senators and Cecido resume contract negotiations when eligible, it will become a part of series of fascinatingdecisions that could determine the future of the franchise. Also on Friday, , agreeing to a one-year contract worth $7.35 million. The Stone case surprised some who expected longer term. The Sensmust wait until Jan. 1 to discu s an extension with Stone, too. StonejoinsKarl son and top center Matt Duchenein the final year of their contracts. All three could becomeunrestricted free agents in 2019, provided none are traded before then. The Senators already have parted with Mike Hoffman this offseason and are expected to soon sell off more veterans, namely Karl son. Exree Loe Jersey

More NHL: | | | | | A few days after shipping Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh, the made another move on Monday by trading defenseman to the .In return for Bouwmeester the Flames will get St. Louis' first-round pick in the upcoming draft, defenseman and goalie Reto Berra. If the Blues don't make the playoffs this season then the Flames will get a fourth-round pick in this draft and the first-rounder will be deferred to the following draft. With that, it's definitely open season on the Flames roster.Unle s you really value that first-round pick -- which will probably be middle of the road or worse -- it's not a Jarrett Culver Jersey particularly great return for Calgary. Flames GM Jay Feaster had said he wanted to get a good return that involved NHL-ready players if he moved Bouwmeester, but neither Cundari nor Berra would appear to fit that mold, at least not as elite prospects. Cundari, 22, is a rather small defenseman at 5-10. He went undrafted out of the OHL and signed with the Blues. This season for the Peoria Rivermen in the AHL he has seven goals, 18 a sists in 56 games while racking up 80 penalty minutes.Standing 6-4, Berra fits the mold of big goalies, but the Swi s native is 27 now and still hasn't made it over to North America since the Blues drafted him back in 2006. He is playing for Biel in the Swi s League, having played in 49 games this season and posting pedestrian numbers with a 3.01 goals against average and .906 save percentage. It seems like a light return for Bouwmeester from Calgary's perspective, but at this point they needed to move on and got what they could, both for Iginla and for Bouwmeester. Bouwmeester's name had been mentioned in the past as a po sible trade target and connected with the Blues as well as the Red Wings, but one problem was that Bouwmeester had to sign off on any deal. With him in his fourth season with the Flames and Calgary headed once again for an early offseason, he obviously gave his consent. It was thought there was some trepidation about acquiring Bouwmeester because he carries a pretty heavy salary. After having his contract rights traded to Calgary from Florida, Bouwmeester signed a deal that brings a $6.68 million cap hit through next season. For a player whose offensive production had gone down in Calgary, it seemed a bit bloated. But that doesn't speak to Bouwmeester's reliability. Until this trade, Bouwmeester has not mi sed a game since 2003-04. He's the NHL's current iron man, and he's a huge minutes eater to boot. This season he has played 25 minutes per game with the Flames. For a guy who is not a liability on the back end, it's reasonable. You know what you're going to get from JayBo. Bouwmeester brings another bit of baggage with him to St. Louis. He is the NHL record holder for most games played without making the postseason. Since his whole career up to this point has been spent with the Panthers and Flames, he hasn't been to the playoffs despite playing 750 games. Olli Jokinen -- who also spent time with the Panthers and Flames -- went longer to start his career without the postseason than Bouwmeester up to this point, but he finally broke through, leaving Bouwmeester as that dubious record holder.Obviously, the hope in St. Louis is that will change this season. The Blues are in a surprising spot, fighting for a berth into the postseason. The defense, which was so good last season, has been a major disappointment, both in front of the goalies and between the pipes. That's why they went out and acquired from Buffalo earlier this week. (Fun fact: the Panthers traded Bouwmeester and received Leopold in return from Calgary).Plus, while Bouwmeester's offensive output had been down, he has enjoyed a bit of a rebound this season. He can still bring some of that offense he was known for in Florida. Kevin Garnett Jersey

Who remembers the 1919 Montreal Canadiens? Anyone? Because that's how far back you have to go to find a team that did what the Edmonton Oilers just did on Thursday night in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Oilers trailed 3-0, on the road, and came back to beat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime on a Leon Draisaitl winner. that the last team to come back from 3-0 down on the road to win a Stanley Cup Finals game was the 1919 Montreal Canadiens, who beat the Seattle Metropolitans in such a scenario back in Game 5 a cool 106 years ago. Way back on March 29, 1919, Seattle scored twice in the first period and once in the second. That set up Montreal for three third-period goals, the second and third come from Newsy Lalonde. In overtime Isaac Bonga Jersey , Jack McDonald scored the winner. Ironically, that series ended up as a 2-2-1 tie. Game 4 had ended up as a scorele s draw after two overtime periods didn't get a goal. And then the series was abandoned due to the Spanish Flu. MORE: This time around, either the Oilers or Panthers will really win it. It certainly looked like it'd be Florida when it scored the first three goals in dominant fashion on its home ice, already holding a 2-1 series lead. But then Edmonton stormed back with four in a row. The Panthers scored a miraculous goal with 19 seconds left to force overtime. It was the second-latest overtime-forcing goal in Stanley Cup Finals history, behind only Corey Perry's 18-second magic earlier in this series for Edmonton. In OT, there were great chances both ways before Draisaitl ended it. For anyone watching Thursday night, don't worry if you can't remember the 1919 Canadiens. Because now you've got the 2025 Oilers.
More Rick Barry Jersey Playoffs: | | | | Blackhawks win 3-1 | CHI leads series 1-0| :The Blackhawks were severely dominated in po se sion in this game, though you wouldn't know it by the scoreline. A strong start and finish to the game was enough for the Blackhawks to knock off the Kings. Chicago wasn't very good in the second period, as LA just controlled the play, but the Blackhawks came out of the middle period with a 2-1 lead. They really got going in the third period, though. Everything looked better in the final frame as the Blackhawks played confidently with the lead. Despite the poor second, the Blackhawks had flashes of brilliance at both ends of the ice. Good goaltending from Corey Crawford was so huge for the team as he made sure that second period didn't get out of hand. There is a fair amount to work on after this game, but if nothing else, the Blackhawks showed they could finish a game, which is something they struggled to do early in the postseason. That third period was a strong one. :From the tight turnaround between this series and their seven-game marathon against the , you wouldn't have blamed the Kings if they were flat in Game 1. But they weren't at all. The Kings actually had the better of the play in the game, bolstered by a second period in which they outshot the Blackhawks 17-6. They only got one goal out of the onslaught, which in the end was all they'd get. The Kings stuck to what has made them succe sful in these playoffs, but ran into a solid goalie and some strong defensive play from the Blackhawks. The game evened out in the third period and the Kings came close to tying the score on a breakaway, but he hit the post. If that puck goes in, it's a different game. Those are the breaks in a tight series. Now LA gets two full days off to unwind from a very busy 48 hours and recharge knowing they were in this one to the end. Play of the Game:After he had a goal disallowed earlier in the game, got rewarded when the Blackhawks found themselves on a three-on-one break. After Bryan Bickell absorbed a check, Marian Ho sa started a rush up ice. He was joined by and Toews. Ho sa dropped the puck to Oduya, who then sent a no-look pa s to Toews for a one-timed snap shot into the top of the net. That made it 3-1 late in the third period and pretty much iced the game for the Blackhawks. From the way the play started to the finish, this was the game's prettiest goal and it was a huge one for Chicago.Player of the Game:The nod goes to Corey Crawford for his 25-save performance, most notably his 16-save effort in the second period. Had he not been there to help the Blackhawks weather that storm, it could have been a very different game. After his performance during Chicago's Cup run last year and how he has been going throughout this postseason, Crawford should become better known as a reliable postseason goalie. He was just so steady in this game and it allowed Chicago to keep pre sing even when they were struggling.Turning Point:The Blackhawks surviving the second period was probably the most important aspect of this game, so the buzzer after the second was probably the turning point. After being badly outshot 17-6 and having that goal disallowed, the Blackhawks managed to come out of the second still in the lead at 2-1. When Chicago came out for the third period, everything seemed a fair amount more even. Weathering that second period storm and surviving with the lead was huge for them.GIF of the Game: Marian Ho sa might be 35. He might be widely considered as a highly-skilled player, which doesn't get him much street cred for his toughne s. But make no mistake, Ho sa's physical strength is as good as anybody's. got a good idea of just how strong Ho sa is as he attempted to hit the Blackhawks forward. The end result? Brown on his rear end, violently. Kaleb Wesson Jersey

Close your eyes and picture this: It's a relaxing, warm night in August. You just spent the day having fun in the sun, trying to soak up what's left of the summer months. Night rolls around and you and your friends get together to watch...the Stanley Cup Playoffs? You can open your eyes now, because that may soon be your reality. The NHL season due to the global COVID-19 outbreak but the league is currently exploring options with regards to a potential return down the Ty Jerome Jersey road. According to recent reports, there's a po sibility that return could come sometime in July and feature games being played into September. When the NHL announced it was pausing operations on March 12, the league reportedly reached out to teams about their arena building availability through July. Now, , clubs are being asked to provide availability through August, suggesting that the league is exploring the idea of running the Stanley Cup Playoffs deep into the summer months. It would be a bold and unprecedented decision and one that comes with plenty of questions begging to be answered. How would the schedule work? There's not much in the way of specifics right now but the idea might line up with a popular proposed plan from NHL players. That plan has players regrouping for a brief training camp in early July before finishing out the regular season (most teams have 10-12 games remaining) in late July. It's unknown if the league would play the full 82-game slate to completion or settle on a reduced number. After that, the playoffs would be held in August and September, with a one-month offseason in October before the next league year begins in November. Under this format, the NHL would also need to inquire about arena availability in September, which has yet to happen as far as we know. Per the NHL players and some of the Board of Governors are in favor of this plan to some extent. Very interesting. Situation is obviously very fluid. Jason Myrtetus (@jasonmyrt) Here's what we know right now: With the current CDC recommendations, the earliest po sible return for the league is early May but that's very optimistic considering the way things are trending with regards to the COVID-19 outbreak. In a normal playoff format, the postseason would take about three months, so if the NHL wants to stick to a traditional Stanley Cup Playoffs this year without the season carrying into September, they would need to begin the playoffs by July. What would the playoffs look like?Obviously, it all depends on when the NHL deems it safe and appropriate to return to action, but the league would presumably love to stick with a normal playoff format. Such a scenario sees eight teams from each conference qualify in a four-round, best-of-seven bracket. However, finishing the regular season and holding a traditional postseason might not work logistically if the league wants to wrap everything up by September. In which case, the NHL would either need to scrap a portion of -- or the entire remainder of the regular season, or they would need to find an alternative (see: shorter) playoff format.Traditional playoff formatIf the NHL is ultimately forced to forego the rest of the regular season and start the playoffs based on the current standings, it's likely that points percentage would be used to determine playoff seeding. Points percentage is the percentage of points a team has accrued in the standings based on their maximum po sible point total. Here's how the first round would be seeded based on the current standings:Eastern Conference: (Atlantic 1) vs. (Wild Card 2) (Atlantic 2) vs. (Atlantic 3) (Metro 1) vs. (Wild Card 1) (Metro 2) vs. (Metro 3)Western Conference:St. Louis (Central 1) vs. (Wild Card 2) (Central 2) vs. (Central 3) (Pacific 1) vs. (Wild Card 1) (Pacific 2) vs. (Pacific 3)Alternative playoff formatsIf the league places a higher priority on finishing out what remains of the regular season, which is certainly po sible from a financial standpoint, then a shorter playoff format would likely be nece sary. Several po sible ideas have been floated in the hockey community, including these po sibilities: Regular four-round format/seeding with shorter series. It's been suggested the first three rounds could be best-of-five, with the Stanley Cup Final being best-of-seven.A three-round format, similar to what the NHL ran in its Original Six and Expansion Era days. It would basically eliminate the entire first round of the traditional format and feature four teams from each conference (the top two qualifiers from each division) in a best-of-seven all the way through. There's also been a bizarre wild card being thrown into play: A 24-team playoff that would feature quick eliminators and playoff rounds. This is the boldest and most drastic proposal, but it apparently has some support from inside the league -- probably because of the widened playoff revenue teams could pull in. I know of one team that considers this a strong option. NHL schedule maker is literally working through all options and NHL clubs are submitting creative ideas as well. Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) What are some of the complications and concerns?Being able to enjoy hockey through the summer with an extremely short offseason in between the league years probably sounds wonderful to fans -- especially when the alternative is likely cancellation -- but such a scenario does come with elements of concern.First and foremost, maintaining suitable ice quality during the hot summer months will be a difficult (and expensive) challenge for some teams, especially those that play warmer weather cities. The humidity level could have a negative effect on playing surfaces, which could sacrifice the quality of the product and put players more at risk for injury. That being said, it's likely that the league could make it work, though ice crews would have to be extra diligent in their preparations.Secondly, a shortened offseason would present a difficult turnaround for many players, especially those who made deep, grueling runs in the playoffs. A typical NHL offseason lasts about three months and we often see injuries and ailments suffered during the playoffs carry into the following season. Cutting one- or two-thirds of that recovery time could have major implications for players/teams going into next season. However, the silver lining here is that players who have been battling lingering health i sues during the regular season will be able to head into the playoffs with a few months of downtime. The proposed one-month offseason from players would also put front offices in a tough spot. They would have to organize and consolidate all of their draft and free agency plans into a condensed timeline and then operate on an expedited schedule. There are also complications when it comes to legalities. As Bob McKenzie pointed out, some NHL contracts are set to expire on June 30 of this year -- a reflection of the last day of a normal league year. If the season is extended and teams play beyond that point, those contracts will need to be amended in order for players to legally participate in-game action. Work visas would also be a point of concern for several international players. How would it affect next season? As much as the NHL would like to find an appropriate and satisfying resolution to this season, they also face the pre sure of minimizing the current predicament's impact on next season. As previously mentioned, playing through August would cut down on the offseason and put players and executives in a more difficult position heading into next year. If the NHL is considering the players' proposal as a legitimate po sibility, the targeted November start date would bring a one-month delay to the start of next season. That would likely lead to more condensed scheduling (or perhaps a slightly extended league calendar) for 2020-21 before the league was able to return to its normal operations timeline.
James Neal finally started to get some results in Game 4. (USATSI)More : | | | | | If you watched every game this postseason and didn't look at any goal or point totals, you might have had a hard time believing that entered Wednesday's game with just one goal and two a sists in the team's first nine games.Just by watching him, you could see that he was certainly playing better than those numbers would have indicated. The effort was there, the chances were there, and he was doing the right things. He was getting his chances, and he had been by the Penguins' best po se sion player (by a wide margin) entering Game 4.Playoff Grades But he was getting absolutely no results to show for his hard work and strong play. Sometimes that happens, even to the best players. It's a fast, difficult game and sometimes no matter how hard you work and how well you play the puck isn't always going to find the back of the net for you. That's Tre Jones Jersey kind of what had been happening to Neal.In Sunday's Game 3 lo s, for example, he was one of Pittsburgh's best forwards and seemed to do his part to generate more quality chances than any other player on the team but couldn't find a way to sneak anything behind Ottawa goalie .Even in the first period on Wednesday that bad luck continued when he fired a quick snap shot off the post to the left of Anderson. But then later in the period the floodgates finally started to open for Neal when and he started to get rewarded for his play. After the scored a shorthanded goal to open the soring, Neal got Pittsburgh on the board off of a faceoff, and then started their third period scoring binge with a power play goal to give Pittsburgh a two-goal lead. They would add three more goals over the rest of the period on their way to a blowout win.The fact that Neal is starting to get going, and now finding the back of the net, is nothing but good news for Pittsburgh. Perhaps even better news is that his line of and played what had to be its best game in ... well, actually it was probably the best game that trio has played together since they've all been in the lineup. That group has been a constant topic of debate in Pittsburgh as no matter what alignment they go with (Neal on the left and Iginla on the right, or Iginla on the right and Neal on the left) it moves one of the wingers out of their comfort zone positionally and where they might be able to play their best hockey. Sidney Crosby does it again The results haven't always been pretty, and the chemistry hasn't always looked like it's been there, even as the Penguins continued to make it work when there might have been different line combinations that could have put people (like Iginla and Neal) into their best positions.Keeping the discu sion going is that the Penguins, when all of their top forwards are in the lineup, have been very reluctant to break up their top line of , , and , and for good reason. That line has been one of the best in the NHL this season (and continues to be in the postseason) and you know they're going to score. But the second line hasn't always looked comfortable, even though Malkin and Iginla have been putting up a ton of points on their own. On Wednesday this was Pittsburgh's best line as the trio combined for 17 shots and four goals (two each from Iginla and Neal). When they were on the ice together during 5-on-5 play they outshot the Senators 12-6 and outscored them 2-0.Iginla and Neal also both added goals on the power play. Trey Lyles Jersey

Things keep getting worse for the Vancouver Canucks. The team lost its second straight Wednesday night, are now 4-6-0 in their last ten, and are without their head coach John Tortorella due to suspension. Henrik Sedin remains out with a rib injury, alongside and Chris Tanev, . Now staring down a five-game road trip to close out their schedule before the break, the Canucks got more bad news on the injury front Thursday. Carmelo Anthony Jersey The blue line took another hit as Kevin Bieksa . The injury is undisclosed, but Bieksa has . He is out indefinitely. Even worse, forward Mike Santorelli has undergone shoulder surgery and . Santorelli had been a nice find. A guy who scored 20 goals in 2010-11 for Florida and just 11 in the three years following, the 28 year old had picked up 10 scores and a sisted on 18 more in 49 games this season. He suffered the shoulder injury against the Coyotes on January 16 and had not played since. Is Santorelli a guy whose individual lo s will break a teams season? Of course not. Neither is Bieksas or Tanevs. But all of them together, combined Sedins absence and Tortorellas suspension to boot? Thats a tough mountain to overcome. For a team struggling before these problems began to pile up, that Olympic break has to look very appealing. In theory, all of their mi sing pieces, sans Santorelli, will be back in action when the Canucks return to the ice on February 26. The Canucks just have to hope their season doesnt go up in smoke before then. DeMarcus Cousins Jersey

More NHL offseason: | | | | has made his decision; he's coming back. For the last time.LeBron James take note, this is how you make a "decision."The veteran Ducks forward has been mulling over his options all summer but signs have been pointing toward him returning for another season. On Friday he gave confirmation after apparetly figuring out that he stinks at golfing. Considering every retired hockey player apparently turns to golf, he's not ready for Grayson Allen Jersey retirement. This video is just another reminder of how awesome Selanne is. I defy you to find me 10 hockey fans that dislike the guy. They don't exist, not even in Kings country right up I-5. Now this will be it for Selanne as he says in the video he's coming back for one more season. No more summers of contemplation, this is the swan song for the 42-year-old star. My advice: check your local team's schedule and see when the Ducks are coming to town then buy a ticket. With the new alignment he will be visiting every single NHL arena next season so don't mi s out.As for the actual hockey implications for the Ducks, Eric Stephens of the O.C. Register says the .At this point it remains to be seen what kind of role Selanne will be in. He saw a diminished role last season under Bruce Boudreau as his playing time dipped to 15:42 per game last season when he had 12 goals and 12 a sists in 46 games. It was just two seasons ago that Selanne had 26 goals and 40 a sists as one of the Ducks' most productive playes. It's a far cry from his 40-plus goal seasons but still very good production. He's likely to remain in a somewhat diminished role but it can't be that far down the depth chart as it was a concern for him.But it doesn't matter now, all that matters is that the legend is back. By the way if he can manage to score 25 goals this season he will hit the 700-goal mark for his career, something only six players have ever done in their careers.
As October creeps closer, another NHL season creeps with it. In the 23rd of a series of team-by-team summer reviews and season previews, here's a glimpse at the ... New York Rangers It was yet another playoff season for the in 2016-17, when a score-by-committee approach led the team to the fifth best goal differential (plus-36) in the league and an underrated postseason berth out of a Metropolitan Division that also included the Presidents' Trophy-winning and defending Stanley Cup champion . A couple of so-so stretches, like a 6-5-4 run in January and 0-3-2 mark at Madison Square Anthony Lamb Jersey Garden that same month, didn't overshadow a high-flying offense and some late life from agele s goalie . New York (48-28-6) also boasted some of the hottest months of the year -- it went 10-4-1 in November and 9-3-1 in February -- before ousting the in the first round of the playoffs. Outdone by the underdog in the subsequent series, the Rangers entered the summer in a peculiar but not uncommon situation, attempting both to prepare for the future, a post-Lundqvist contender, and ready their already-talented roster for an immediate return to the postseason. Under general manager Jeff Gorton, they stirred as many questions as they answered. The moves Key additions: D (Capitals), D (trade with ), G ( ), F (Canadiens) Key lo ses: F (trade with Coyotes), G (trade with Coyotes), D ( ), F ( ), D (retired) Lots of notable names were shown the door this summer. For the better: Girardi, who somehow got $6 million from Tampa Bay despite obvious signs of decline as an aging blue-liner in New York. For the worse: Lindberg, who might've been one of the most sturdy, valuable players available in the expansion draft outside of the Pens' . For the unknown: Stepan, who did get the Rangers bra s a nice haul and a first-round draft pick but still gave the team proven No. 1 center experience. Whether or not you agree he deserved the hype he got as a top free agent defenseman, Shattenkirk's addition came at a very reasonable price for the Rangers. There's the fact that he to come "home" to the Rangers, and then there's the fact that New York needed blue-line help (see: key lo ses) and managed to land the market's consensus No. 1 D-man. DeAngelo is a good get for his potential, too, although there can't be many fans who are overly willing for Pavelec and his Winnipeg resume to see the ice in relief of "The King." The verdict Whether it's because of history or merely name recognition, it's hard not to equate "New York Rangers" with "Stanley Cup Playoffs." Alain Vigneault hasn't been with this team for a non-postseason campaign since he came aboard and took the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final in 2013-14, and the 35-year-old Lundqvist, believe it or not, has been playing in Big Apple playoff games since the 2005-06 season. There are plenty of reasons to believe the trend of playoff contention will continue, too, now that Shattenkirk is in the fold on defense as both an ideal partner for captain and a clear upgrade over the aging Girardi and Klein. All eyes will be on Mika Zibanejad in 2017-18 following the departure of Derek Stepan in New York. USATSI Even though the Rangers haven't relied exclusively on one standout to drive their scary offense, however, there is reason for concern there. may be the guy to replace Stepan, but even New York doesn't know that, even if the five-year extension the team gave him this offseason suggests it does. will also be in the mix, but the gist is this: The Rangers need someone to step up, whether it's one of those two young centers, a J.T. Smith or a youthful DeAngelo from the blue line. And even then, questions remain regarding Lundqvist, whose wasn't too concerning but could be under pre sure if age keeps catching up to him. Bottom line: The Rangers are playoff material. But are they Stanley Cup Final material? Probably not. Of course, most teams don't appear to be, but this group is balancing between a rebuild and a serious run, and in a division that could very well tout four 100-point clubs for a second straight year, the unknowns are a little daunting. Lots of them returned to their teams city in mid-June and almost no one brought family. So for some players, youre now approaching 60 days away from your family... Thomas Drance (@ThomasDrance) MORE: While Rask's family was the key motivator in his decision to opt out, he also hasn't much enjoyed playing in the NHL's bubble atmosphere even as the league has progre sed to the postseason: To be honest with you, it doesnt really feel like playoff hockey out there. There are no fans, so its kind of like playing an exhibition game, Rask said following Boston's Game 2 lo s to the Hurricanes on Thursday. Its definitely not a playoff atmosphere out there. You try and play as hard as you can. When youre playing at a home rink and an away rink and the fans are cheering for and against you, it really creates a buzz for the series. Theres none of that. So it just feels like dull at times. There are moments when there are scrums and whatnot, and then there will be five minutes when its coast-to-coast hockey. Theres no atmosphere. So it feels like an exhibition game. Were trying our best to ramp and get energized, and make it feel like its a playoff game.
Sergei Bobrovsky has goaltended the to back-to-back Stanley Cups. Is that really a guy that could be moved before the NHL trade deadline of March 6? Well, the rumors appear to have some real legs to them. about the situation in a new article on Thursday, and while he describes a Bobrovsky trade as a "shocking po sibility," he then explains why it might make sense. Moses Malone Jersey It starts, of course, with the precarious position the Panthers find themselves in. "The Panthers had an 18% chance of making the playoffs coming out of the break, according to our latest ," Wyshynski writes."Much of that depends on if and when star centerAleksander Barkovreturns, and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions can put together a run to make the postseason, where they'll remain inherently dangerous thanks to a deep roster and, of course, Sergei"Playoff Bob"Bobrovsky." MORE: Then you add in Bobrovsky's contract. He'll be a free agent after the season. "ESPN's Kevin Weekes said it's a situation worth watching, particularly because Bobrovsky is a pending unrestricted free agent who has yet to receive a contract extension," Wyshynski writes. "He has two Vezina Trophies and two Stanley Cup wins to his credit. He makes $10 million against the salary cap, but only $6 million actual dollars this season, with trade protection. He's also 37 years old." If the Panthers don't think they can make the dance, and if they want any value back for Bob, they'd trade him. "A short-term contract to backstop a veteran team that's back to full strength next season would seem like one avenue," Wyshynski writes. "But they do have 26-year-oldDaniil Tarasov-- who, for what it's worth, has outplayed Bobrovsky this season. As Weekes said, this is something to watch." It'd be the end of an era if the Panthers trade Bobrovsky. That era might be coming to an end regardle s. More NHL news: Rajon Rondo Jersey

More NHL: | | | | | For the fourth time in five seasons, the and will make their acquaintances in the playoffs. That's all before they join the same conference starting next season. If it's anything like last year's series, it probably won't be must-see TV. About the only thing positive you could say about that series is that it had Darius Miller Jersey some drama with a few overtime games, including a triple-OT battle in Washington. Outside of that, it was low-scoring, shot-blocking hockey.Thankfully, that shouldn't be the case again. It was kind of a perfect mixture for such a series last year when the Rangers were led by John Tortorella and the Capitals had Dale Hunter. Torts is still there -- and he returns to the site of his great -- but Adam Oates is now coaching the Caps instead of Hunter. The effects took a while to show this season, but the Caps are as far away from Hunter Hockey as could be. Under Oates, the Caps progre sively got better and better as the season wore along, of course led by the surge of after Oates moved him to the right wing instead of the left side. As a result, the Caps were able to complete an impre sive comeback -- even if it was the Southeast Division -- and win the division title. They have been one of the best teams in the second half. The Rangers, meanwhile, had high hopes coming into the season but for the most part fell short of that in the regular season. The good news is that a team can make everybody forget about that with succe s in the playoffs. They finished the season strong by winning seven of their last nine to climb up to the six seed. Of course, that was also mostly against non-playoff teams. This is the battle of strength on strength. The Capitals have been a scorching-hot team in the second half of the season and it's led to them to becoming a top-five offense in the league again in terms of goals scored. The catalyst is obviously Ovechkin, who had 23 goals in the final 23 games and has really taken off playing on the right wing after a slow adjustment period in the beginning of the season. The concern is that the Caps aren't a strong po se sion team and have had a lot of their succe s with a high shooting percentage of 10.8 percent. Playoff hockey and the Rangers specifically could precipitate a fall back to a more average rate. If it weren't for the Rangers' defensive abilities, they might not have even qualified for the playoffs. Once again, they were a top-five defense in the league this season, finishing fourth with a measly 2.25 goals against per game despite being without one of their best defensemen for much of the season in Marc Staal. Considering they are still Tortorella's team, they block shots. led all defensemen in blocks this season and did the same among forwards. Plus, it helps playing in front of a King. The Rangers couldn't score for most of the season and the struggles were being pinned mostly on and the departed . Perhaps it was the additions they got at the trade deadline that added some depth, or maybe it was the soft schedule to close, but the Rangers got a major uptick in offense in the final weeks of the season. They had 14 goals in a two-game span. Even if that scoring outburst is attributable to poor defenses, it could have been the confidence boost they needed. is the focal point as he has been all they hoped for with 21 goals and 21 a sists, but was actually the team leader in points. They can throw two lines out there with double-digit scorers. The Caps don't have the strongest defense in the league, finishing 18th in the NHL with 2.71 goals against per game. Under Oates, they are resembling the Capitals of a few years ago more and more. The big concern is that the Caps give up a lot of shots, the third most in the league at 32.3 per game. It has helped having a healthy back because not only is he arguably the best offensive defenseman in the NHL -- he led all Dmen with 12 goals -- but he does help them break out of the zone and get on the rush where Ovechkin can work his magic. The big shot blocker is , who finished third in the league, two behind Girardi. The Rangers will just about always have the advantage in this department as long as is still playing. He was probably the Rangers' MVP again this season, finishing with an impre sive .926 save percentage and a goals against average of 2.05. Over his career his numbers are lower in the playoffs than the regular season but a lot of that fear was put to rest last year when Lundqvist had a .931 save percentage in 20 postseason games. Simply put, he's one of the best in the busine s.The Caps counter with , a guy who has not received anywhere near enough of the credit he deserves for Washington's second-half surge. Holtby broke out on the scene last year in the playoffs and carried it over into this season pretty well. Despite facing as many shots as he does, he finished with a .920 save percentage, an above-average number. What makes this version of the Caps different than those run-and-gun teams of a few years ago is that they no longer seem to have a big liability in the crease. The question is if Holtby can rekindle that playoff magic he had last year in Hunter's system when he had a .935 save percentage in 14 games. The power play is where the Capitals really do their work. They hit on 26.8 percent of chances this season, the top unit in the league. This is where Ovechkin has really excelled, scoring 16 of his 32 goals on the man advantage. It's also where Green's presence has been huge, playing at one of the point positions. Their PK is a concern, though. Washington killed just 77.9 percent of penalties this season, the fourth-worst percentage in the league. The question is if that will be a big concern against the Rangers, who once again struggled on the power play. They haven't been able to figure that out over the years. This season they hit on just 15.7 percent of opportunities, the 23rd best mark in the league. You'd think they'd make up for it on the PK unit but that was just average, checking in at 15th in the league. How this series goes in terms of penalties will have a big impact on the series. Washington would welcome a penalty fest while the Rangers would love to stay at even strength. New York was actually the third-best team in the league this season at 5-on-5. That's their recipe for succe s. Tough series to predict, but I'm going to go on a limb and say the Caps stay hot a little longer. Sindarius Thornwell Jersey

One of the NHL's top, young goalscorers is on the move, as the Blackhawks traded Alex DeBrincat to the Senators just hours before the start of the 2022 NHL Draft. DeBrincat, a second-round pick by Chicago in the 2016 NHL Draft, made his NHL debut at the beginning of the 2017-18 NHL season. He ended up playing in all 82 games for the Blackhawks and has developed into a top-tier goal scorer to start his five-year career. In 368 career games, DeBrincat has scored 160 goals and tallied 147 helpers despite playing for a lowly Blackhawks team. He is coming Kyle Korver Jersey off a career-high 78-point season (41 goals) and will make an immediate impact for a Senators team in desperate need of goal-scoring ability. The decision to trade DeBrincat apparently appears to be focused on accelerating the Blackhawks' rebuild, as they are acquiring a bevy of draft capital in exchange for the 24-year-old forward. Below are the details of the deal that sends DeBrincat to the Senators. MORE: Alex DeBrincat trade details Senators get: Alex DeBrincat Blackhawks get: No. 7 pick in 2022 NHL Draft No. 39 pick in 2022 NHL Draft 2024 third-round pick The Blackhawks are getting quite a bit of draft capital in exchange for DeBrincat. They are getting a top-10 selection in the 2022 NHL Draft along with the 39th pick in this year's event from the Senators. Those two, premium picks will allow Chicago to continue to add young talent to their organization as they attempt to win a playoff series for the first time since their Stanley Cup Final victory in 2015. MORE: While the Blackhawks are getting solid picks for DeBrincat, the Senators may make out like Bandits in this deal. DeBrincat has posted two, 41-goal seasons during his five-year career and only six players have scored more goals than him in the last five years. They are as follows: Alex Ovechkin Auston Matthews Leon Draisaitl Connor McDavid Kyle Connor Nathan MacKinnon That's some pretty good company. DeBrincat's 41 goals are especially impre sive when considering that Chicago scored just 213 goals last season, tied for the fourth-fewest in the NHL. The 24-year-old accounted for 19.2 percent of the team's goals and did so despite the fact that defenses could give him their full attention because of the Blackhawks' dearth of overall scoring. MORE: The Senators had two 30-goal scorers last season in Josh Norris (35) andBrady Tkachuk (30). Adding DeBrincat to the mix should give them extra punch and allow them to log more than the 33 wins they managed last season. Of course, Ottawa will have to pay him. He is in the final year of a three-year, $19.2 million deal and will almost certainly get a raise from the $6.4 million he is making in AAV. That upcoming contract likely played a part in the Blackhawks' decision to part with their young scoring maven. Damyean Dotson Jersey

More NHL Playoffs: | | | | Canadiens win 7-4 | NYR lead series 3-2 | Game 6 Thur. : See what playing with the early lead does for this team? The Canadiens had to be a desperate team and they were in this game, only briefly losing that edge of desperation. They came out strong in the first period and earned a power play within the first couple of shifts, leading to a goal. In fact, the power play finally found its form with a couple of goals in the man advantage in this one after starting the series just 1-for-17 with a man advantage. The good thing was that desperation remained as the Habs jumped over the Rangers in each period and didn't let up much except for a few minutes of sleeping at the wheel in the second period when the Rangers scored three quick, unanswered goals. Dustin Tokarski has to be better than he was on this night but the offense was breezing through the zone and was relentle s, torching the and then later . It was a highly entertaining game and from the Habs perspective, a pretty good game, even with four goals against. : The Rangers had a chance to close out the Canadiens on Tuesday night but for much of the game they looked like a team that knows it has two more chances to come. Every period the Rangers were late to the party, failing to even register shots in the Coby White Jersey first five minutes of each period, almost the first 10 minutes in the second. Defensively they were not sound, overcommitting at times and it was a very rare off night for Henrik Lundqvist. They showed good fight in coming back in the game but the Habs had an answer for that too. Lundqvist was pulled at 4-1 and after the Rangers made it 4-4, many were calling for Lundqvist to return but the Rangers stuck with Cam Talbot, who couldn't keep the Habs down either. It can be debated if it was the right call but the Rangers didn't do much on offense to close it out, especially on their third-period power plays.Play of the Game: We shared this play earlier but it's worth sharing again. This pa s from while falling down and on his backhand to was a thing of absolute beauty. We like to think he knew exactly where Pacioretty was (and he probably did).Player of the Game: Well we know it's not any of the goaltenders in this game because while they had help in having rough games, none of them was remotely sharp. Somebody who was, though? Rene Bourque. You get a playoff hat trick and it's tough to say you weren't the player of the game. The first of Bourque's goals, against Lundqvist, was not all that pretty but the second and third? Well those were pretty excellent. This team has shown in the playoffs when they get contribution from him and his line, they get so much more dangerous.Turning Point: This game turned so much that it could leave you sick watching from home. The Rangers turned the game when they pulled Lundqvist for Talbot and promptly scored three goals to tie it up but then the Canadiens came right back and seized the momentum back. It could have been bad and really weighed on the Canadiens but Bourque came through with his impre sive goal, working hard in the slot to beat Talbot high and quickly regain the lead. GIF of the Game: This game was so crazy and had so much going for it that this is the first we're mentioning of 's goal that started the scoring in this game. It came on the power play after a shot from . But notice, he deflects this shot between his legs and past Lundqvist for the goal. So pretty. (GIF .) Thaddeus Young Jersey
